Gas struts are a type of spring that use compressed gas unlike a typical metal spring. Nitrogen gas is contained in a cylinder and compressed by a piston to exert a force. Because of their durability and wide range of force and damping characteristics they are used in hundreds of applications, most commonly to support car tailgate doors.

Fixed Force Gas Strut with plastic push-fit ball socket end fittings.

If piston with a 1” square surface area is used in a cylinder with an internal pressure of 10 pounds per square inch a 10 pound-force or 44N (Newton) will result.

If there is a large volume of gas there is only a small increase in strength as the piston compresses into the cylinder. A small volume of gas results in a larger strength variation.

The standard gas equation is used to calculate the difference. Pressure x volume / temperature (must be kelvins or degrees Rankine) = pressure x volume / temperature.

Oil present inside the cylinder and a fine hole running through the piston dampen the piston motion.
